Who wouldn’t choose to live in their own home for as long as possible? Americans are living longer and want to live independently. Many seniors find themselves as the only original homeowner on their street and do not know their neighbors. Relatives have relocated and now live too far away to visit regularly. Friends are frail or ill. And so some seniors find themselves more isolated and lonely than ever before. Senior Adult Services recognizes that this maybe a dilemma for seniors and their family members and has developed visitation programs to address this need. The Friendly Visitor Program matches a senior with a volunteer friend who can visit at the senior’s home regularly. A senior and their volunteer may have or develop a shared interest such as playing board games, knitting or discussing sports. The program allows for relationships to grow and individual interests to be expressed. Tel-A-Friend matches a senior with a volunteer who can call regularly. Contact may be just a short check up call to determine that the senior is at home and well or the calls could be more conversational and lengthy. Both of these programs offer reassurance to the senior and their family members that someone outside the home will know about the senior’s needs. The programs have flexibility of length and time of visit, however the senior and volunteers will make “dates” prior to the next visit so the senior can know when to expect the visit. If a senior is not home when their volunteer is expected to call or visit and cannot be reached, Senior Adult Services will get in touch with their emergency contact to make sure that everything is ok. There is no cost for either of the visitation services. If you or someone you know is interested in either of the Visitation Programs, please call 972-242-4464 or click here for contact information.
