Golden Girl Scout
Community Servi
ce Project Benefits Seniors
Lizzie Degenfelder has been involved in community service work through the Girl Scouts since she was in the first grade. Now sixteen and a junior at New Tech High in Coppell, she is completing projects that will result in an accomplishment attained by only 3% of Girl Scouts: the Gold Award.

As with the Eagle rank awarded to Boy Scouts, earning the Gold Award requires many hours of planning and organizing for an endeavor that fills an existing need in the community. In honor of her grandmothers, Lizzie wanted to do something to help seniors and developed her project with Tammy Payton, Program Coordinator, at Senior Adult Services(SAS), a non-profit serving seniors and caregivers in Carrollton, Addison, Coppell and Farmers Branch. One of the vital services provided by SAS volunteers is the delivery of restaurant prepared meals to the homes of participating seniors who are unable to manage meal planning. To ensure seniors have items in their pantry that can be used when inclement weather prevents safe delivery of the hot meal, SAS generally makes ready and sends out shelf stable meals several times a year. These include canned meats, soups and fruits along with packaged meals that can be easily prepared.
Ms. Payton says. "Lizzie coordinated a food drive to collect a variety of canned and pre-cooked food items and then created two-day emergency shelf stable food packages. Her project not only saved us the expense and preparation time, it will ultimately benefit our older citizens who are rely on us for a midday meal."
