A home cooked meal is something most people take for granted. If you are the cook, you put together a meal and sit down to enjoy it. But for someone who cannot stand long enough to cook a meal, or can't open a can or jar, or whose family is concerned they might forget to turn the stove off, meal time can become frustrating and lonely.

Working closely with our seniors and their families, Senior Adult Services has long recognized the importance of providing a warm, nutritious meal once a day to people in this situation. And so with our Home Delivered Meals program, we can help make the difference between a person being able to stay at home and care for themselves or having to move to an assisted living facility or other community living situation. Beside the worry and frustration the family and senior suffers, there is the problem of poor nutrition which often leads to worsening health conditions.

When our volunteers deliver these meals they also provide the security of having someone check on the senior at least once a day. If someone is not home to receive their meal and cannot be reached, Senior Adult Services will get in touch with their emergency contact to make sure that everything is ok. Often, something has come up and the senior just forgot to notify SAS, but occasionally the meal volunteers identify problems that need quick action.

The cost of Home Delivered Meals is $4.50, but a reduced fee is available for those who qualify. Meals are available Monday through Friday and are delivered usually between 11:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. This service can be provided for a short or extended time period. A senior might only need the service while recovering from surgery or while a caregiver is out of town or the senior may need the service on an extended basis in order to maintain their independence in their own home environment.
