Caring Hearts Need Care Too

Who is a caregiver?

Each year, more than fifty million people provide care for a chronically ill, disabled, or aged family member or friend. Much of the time, the caregiver does not identify themselves in this role, since they are “just taking care” of their loved one. The role of caregiver can impact the caregiver’s mental outlook and physical health because the demands placed on them leave little time for rest, check-ups, or stress relieving activities. Over time, all of these increase the possibility that the caregiver will develop a chronic illness themselves.

What’s our goal?
Our caregiver program ensures that caregivers have both the emotional support and practical assistance they need in order to continue caring for their loved ones, while reducing the level of stress they experience in their lives.
We accommodate the schedule of the caregiver by setting up our contacts at their convenience, and at the location of their choice. At that time, caregivers are asked to discuss their particular circumstances and needs. These are noted so that a later assessment can be made to measure the impact of the assistance provided, and to determine ways to improve our program.

An individualized approach to meet your needs.
The program coordinator evaluates the information provided by the caregiver  and develops a plan of action to assist them in coping with their particular circumstances. Each caregiver may choose how to receive assistance, from one on one meetings to large group events.

Knowledge is power.
Our program offers education through workshops that address topics of concern to caregivers. We offer valuable information on resources geared to the specific needs of caregivers. Materials cover a wide range of topics  to assist the caregiver in better understanding their role and the needs of their loved one.

Caring hearts need care, too.

Perhaps one of the hardest aspects of caregiving is the emotional strain caregivers experience. Their support system may develop from sharing with staff, individual caregivers in similar situations, or in groups. Program participants can choose which of these best fits their needs and preferences. Follow up contacts will offer continued personal support and encouragement, along with information and referral services.

Many caregivers find that they spend more years caring for an aging loved one than they spend caring for their children. The duration of elder caregiver makes it especially important to get a break, or “respite” from time to time. Our program offers not only information about respite care and how to arrange it, but also financial assistance to those on limited budgets.
