HOME SAFETY CHECKLIST

Can you answer YES to all of these statements?
1) I have at least one working smoke detector on every floor of my home.
2) All inside areas of my home are well lit and I have adequate outdoor lighting.
3) I can safely replace the light bulbs in my home.
4) My bathtub and shower stall are equipped with non-skid mats, abrasive strips, or surfaces that are not slippery.
5) There is at least one grab bar in each bathtub and shower stall and I routinely check the grab bars for strength and stability.
6) The setting on my hot water heater is at "Low" or 120 degrees.
7) I have correct-size fuses in my fuse box.
8) I have checked stairs or steps for worn treads or worn or loose carpeting.
9) I can clearly see the edges of my steps.
10) I have railings and/or ramps to safely help me leave my house.
11) My door locks work well and my doors open easily.
If you answered NO to any of these questions, the Senior Adult Services Home Repair program may be able to help you.
SAS home repair volunteers can:
- check and/or install smoke detectors or necessary batteries
- replace fixtures and light bulbs
- install grab bars and strips to help prevent falls
- check the water heater setting
- check and replace fuses
- remove unsafe carpeting from steps or stairs
- mark steps
- install ramps and railings
If you or someone you know is at least 60 years of age or disabled, call Senior Adult Services at 972-242-4464 for help with these home repairs.
